Home Boy
by Don Cherry
Recorded in Paris with producer Ramuntcho Matta, this wildly unexpected project saw the avant-garde free jazz pioneer embracing contemporary electronic rhythms and dub reggae. 'Home Boy' prominently features Cherry singing softly over early drum machine loops, synthesizers, and his signature pocket trumpet, effectively transforming into an eccentric urban pop vocalist. The highly uncharacteristic, stylized album deeply alienated jazz purists while predicting the eclectic genre-blending of later trip-hop artists.
