Album Notes & Community Reviews
Recorded for the centenary of Duke Ellington's birth, 'Duke Elegant' recasts Ellington standards in Dr. John's New Orleans idiom, his piano and drawled vocal set against soul jazz arrangements. It treats the Ellington songbook as raw material for Crescent City rhythm and stride-inflected piano rather than as repertory homage, the work of a pianist reasserting his jazz lineage.
