Serving as a fiery rebuke to the glossy 'Urban Cowboy' pop prevalent in 1980s Nashville, Yoakam's debut revitalized the gritty, twang-heavy Bakersfield Sound. Originally released as an independent EP before being expanded by Reprise Records, its driving telecaster rhythms and deeply traditional honky-tonk aesthetics instantly cemented him as a leader of the neo-traditionalist movement.
