Attempting to reinvent their sound in a rapidly shifting musical landscape, 'Thriller' sees the pub-rock pioneers expanding their arrangements with heavier production and subtle pop flourishes. While losing some of the frantic, R&B-fueled amphetamine rush of their early work, the record highlights a band striving for maturity and mainstream rock viability. Despite strong musicianship, it struggled to maintain their initial momentum amidst the explosion of post-punk.
