Self-produced in an isolated Scottish studio, the British band pivots entirely away from the massive, arena-sized guitar rock of their previous album. Instead, they plunge into icy, heavily synthesized electronics reminiscent of 1980s darkwave and new romantic pop. Tom Smith's baritone vocals anchor the brooding arrangements, highlighted notably by unexpected vocal duets with Slowdive's Rachel Goswell.
