Attempting to completely strip away the elaborate, multi-layered production of their massively successful previous albums, Extreme opted for a distinctly raw, highly cynical sound on 'Waiting for the Punchline'. The record heavily favors dark, alternative-tinged hard rock and intensely bitter lyricism regarding societal decay. Despite Nuno Bettencourt's consistently brilliant guitar work, the album struggled to find an audience amidst the shifting 90s rock landscape.
