Album Notes & Community Reviews

Fates Warning significantly expanded their traditional heavy metal sound on 'The Spectre Within', introducing the incredibly complex, shifting time signatures that would define progressive metal. John Arch's soaring, multi-octave vocals narrate dark, mystical fantasy concepts over an intricate, highly melodic labyrinth of twin-guitar harmonies. The album is an energetic, mysterious, and deeply ambitious milestone of the American underground.
