The tenor saxophonist eschewed frantic bebop tempos in favor of deeply grooving, blues-oriented balladry alongside pianist Tommy Flanagan and conga player Ray Barretto. The incorporation of subtle Afro-Cuban percussion into the rhythm section proved highly influential to the emerging soul-jazz idiom.
