On 'Necessary Fictions', GoGo Penguin expands their cinematic fusion of jazz and electronica, marking their most adventurous and collaborative work. The album integrates modular synthesizers and, for the first time, features guest vocalists and a string ensemble, creating a dynamic polarity between acoustic and electronic textures. The compositions are characterized by arpeggiating piano, fluid basslines, and intricate drumming, with themes inspired by the brutalist architecture of their native Manchester and a broader journey of self-discovery.
