Calypso

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Igniting a massive, unprecedented American cultural craze for Caribbean rhythms, this incredibly polished release became the first full-length album in history to sell over one million copies. The exceptionally charismatic vocalist smoothed the rough edges of traditional Trinidadian folk styles into highly accessible, widely appealing pop arrangements. Anchored by the iconic 'Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)', it remains a towering commercial milestone of mid-century global crossover.
