S-F-X

by Haruomi Hosono

S-F-X cover art

Released concurrently with the dissolution of Yellow Magic Orchestra, Hosono's first solo album on his Non Standard imprint is a pioneering dive into early digital sampling and electro-funk. Heavily utilizing the Roland TR-808 and EMU Emulator, the music consists of stuttering rhythms, fragmented vocal samples, and bizarre, robotic sound design. It established a wildly innovative template that heavily influenced the development of techno and sample-based electronic music in Japan.
