Album Notes & Community Reviews

Recorded shortly after claiming top honors at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Heikki Sarmanto Quintet delivers a defining masterwork of Finnish spiritual jazz. 'Counterbalance' revolves around deeply emotional, modal compositions highlighted by soaring saxophone solos and Sarmanto's incredibly deft electric piano work. The album perfectly captures the sophisticated, progressive trajectory of early seventies Scandinavian jazz.
