The Singing Prophet

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Capitalizing on his rich, cavernous baritone and history as a groundbreaking vocalist for Duke Ellington, 'The Singing Prophet' showcases Herb Jeffries in a deeply dramatic setting. The recordings integrate subtle exotic and spiritual motifs into the traditional vocal jazz framework, creating a slightly surreal, theatrical atmosphere. It is a highly unique document from a vastly underappreciated pioneer of 20th-century pop.
