Co-produced with John Agnello, 'Painted Shut' captures the band's punk-spirited indie rock, which was largely tracked live to preserve its raw energy. Frances Quinlan's songwriting is characterized by deeply personal and observational narratives, exploring themes of abuse, social anxiety, and mortality, all delivered with a famously elastic vocal performance that shifts from a raw snarl to a delicate croon. The album's instrumentation is built upon intricate and sometimes angular guitar riffs, dynamic start-stop rhythms, and elements of Americana, creating a sound that is both emotionally immediate and musically complex.
