The Idiot
by Iggy Pop
Produced by David Bowie, 'The Idiot' marked a radical departure from the proto-punk of The Stooges, establishing a mechanical, electronic sound Pop described as a cross between James Brown and Kraftwerk. Bowie composed most of the music, utilizing synthesizers, fragmented guitars, and drum machines to create ominous, atmospheric soundscapes over which Pop delivered world-weary lyrics in a subdued baritone. This synthesis of art-rock and industrial textures made the album a seminal influence on the subsequent post-punk and gothic rock movements.
