Album Notes & Community Reviews

Recorded at Stax Studio A in Memphis with the Bar-Kays as the rhythm section, the soundtrack to Gordon Parks' film carried 'Theme from Shaft' to number one on the Hot 100 and made Hayes the first African American to win an Academy Award in a non-acting category. The album itself topped the Billboard 200, sold over a million copies and entered the National Recording Registry in 2014.
