Album Notes & Community Reviews

Released exactly two years after his commercial juggernaut '2014 Forest Hills Drive', J. Cole returns with a deeply subdued, jazz-inflected concept album. The record chronicles the life, struggles, and ultimate demise of a fictionalized friend named James, serving as a cautionary tale explicitly recorded for James's young daughter. It went platinum with no features, showcasing Cole's commitment to stark, conscious storytelling over pop-rap trends.
