Album Notes & Community Reviews

'It's a Mother' belongs to James Brown's late-1960s run of rhythmically concentrated records that pushed soul toward funk minimalism. The album is built around tight vamps, call-and-response direction, and the disciplined interplay of his working band. It captures Brown in the period immediately before the arrival of the J.B.'s further codified his 1970s funk sound.
