Originally intended as a compilation album showcasing the Roc-A-Fella Records roster, it ultimately morphed into a Jay-Z solo album featuring extensive guest appearances. Crucially, the project launched the careers of producers Just Blaze and Kanye West, introducing the heavily chopped, pitched-up soul sampling aesthetic that would dominate the decade.
