Marking a drastic and highly controversial sonic detour, Ian Anderson stripped away much of the band's folk-prog instrumentation in favor of heavy sequencing and drum machines. The record deals with Cold War espionage themes, dressed in a sleek, synthetic production style heavily influenced by contemporary 80s new wave. The subsequent tour resulted in severe vocal strain for Anderson, permanently altering his singing voice.
