Album Notes & Community Reviews

Seeking a commercial resurgence, the country icon recorded this album featuring several contemporary covers, most notably two Bruce Springsteen tracks including the title song. 'Johnny 99' leans into slicker, 1980s country-rock production values while retaining Cash's signature, booming baritone and fascination with working-class narratives. Despite strong performances, the album continued a period of commercial decline for the legendary artist.
