As her first entirely self-produced album, 'The Dreaming' is a dense and experimental work where Kate Bush fully embraced the studio as an instrument. The sound is characterized by its extensive use of the Fairlight CMI sampler, layered vocal textures, polyrhythmic percussion, and a wide array of unconventional instruments, including didgeridoos and uilleann pipes. Lyrically, the songs move through a series of disparate narratives inspired by sources ranging from historical events and crime films to the writings of Stephen King. Initially met with a mixed reception for its uncommercial nature, the album has since been recognized as a landmark of artistic autonomy and a major influence on subsequent generations of artists.
