Album Notes & Community Reviews

The pianist's sole album as a leader for Columbia Records is a sprawling, wildly ambitious double-LP that refuses to be categorized. Utilizing a massive ensemble that includes Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and the electric guitar of Sam Brown, the material touches on blistering free jazz, gospel-inflected vamps, and orchestrated Latin fusion. Jarrett was reportedly dropped by the label shortly after its release, making it a brilliant, anomalous outlier in his catalog.
