Album Notes & Community Reviews
Showcasing remarkable multi-instrumental prowess on the flute, oboe, and alto saxophone, this session navigates the complex midpoint between rigid hard bop and the emerging 'New Thing'. The compositions employ unusual time signatures and fiercely independent rhythmic ideas without entirely abandoning a swinging foundation. 'Year of the Iron Sheep' is a cerebral, underappreciated gem of the early 60s jazz avant-garde.
