A portrait of the Satsuma biwa master on the instrument she redesigned with extra frets, the so-called Tsuruta biwa, accompanied by fellow biwa players Kakuo Tanaka, Kakuryu Saito and Kakujo Iwasa. Tsuruta had carried the instrument onto the world stage in November 1967, premiering Takemitsu's 'November Steps' with the New York Philharmonic under Seiji Ozawa alongside shakuhachi player Katsuya Yokoyama.
