The Solastalgia Suite
by Kris Davis & Lutosławski Quartet
'The Solastalgia Suite' is an eight-movement work for piano and string quartet, thematically centered on the concept of solastalgia, or the distress caused by environmental change. The piece merges Kris Davis's avant-garde jazz sensibilities with the modern classical vocabulary of Poland's Lutosławski Quartet, creating a dialogue that shifts between composed structure and improvisation. The production balances the jarring, dissonant textures of the string ensemble with Davis's more lyrical and reflective piano passages to evoke feelings of anxiety, loss, and fragile optimism.
