Kurt Wagner completely abandons his signature acoustic guitar, composing the entirety of the band's sixteenth album on piano. The record drifts through highly abstract, jazz-inflected chamber pop arrangements, heavily utilizing MIDI sequencing and deeply atmospheric brass elements to accompany his hushed, spoken-word baritone. The project is an incredibly subtle, unpredictable evolution for the veteran alt-country pioneers.
