Discovered while washing dishes in Texas, the 25-year-old artist delivered an astonishingly authentic, note-perfect homage to 1960s Sam Cooke-era soul. The record completely eschews modern R&B production trends in favor of vintage recording equipment, live-in-the-room analog engineering, and pristine, gospel-inflected vocal performances. The stunningly accurate retro aesthetic instantly catapulted him into mainstream prominence.
