The Norwegian duo completely bypassed traditional live percussion, heavily utilizing a programmed drum machine to propel their incredibly dense, symphonic arrangements. The dizzying layers of gothic keyboards and classical orchestration frequently overshadow the extreme guitar work, creating a uniquely suffocating and cinematic atmosphere. This aggressive reliance on synthetic elements distinguished them sharply from their black metal contemporaries.
