Shedding the dense, ethereal shoegaze textures of their early output, the quartet embraced the bright, guitar-driven pop sensibilities of the prevailing Britpop movement. The songwriting is notably direct and conversational, heavily addressing modern relationships with a sharp, sarcastic wit. While achieving their greatest commercial success, the era ended in profound tragedy with the sudden passing of drummer Chris Acland shortly after the release.
