Pivoting away from their earlier psychedelic hard rock origins, the Wichita trio's sophomore effort represents their first true foray into unadulterated heavy metal. It established the epic, fantasy-oriented lyrical themes and aggressive riff structures that would come to define their legendary underground career. Though rough in its production, 'Metal' laid the critical groundwork for the nascent US power metal movement.
