Album Notes & Community Reviews
The third installment of Matana Roberts' ambitious 12-part 'Coin Coin' series, 'Coin Coin Chapter Three: River Run Thee' is a solo work that contrasts with the ensemble pieces of its predecessors. Roberts constructs a dense and harrowing electroacoustic tapestry from her own alto saxophone and voice, layering them with drones, field recordings, spoken word, and loop pedals. The album functions as a deeply personal and experimental exploration of African-American history, weaving fragments of traditional songs and samples from a Malcolm X lecture into a continuous, immersive soundscape recorded and mixed by Radwan Ghazi Moumneh.
