Jazz in 3/4 Time

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Predating the massive, widespread experimentation with alternative time signatures that would dominate jazz at the end of the decade, the master drummer constructs an entire album dedicated to the waltz. Anchored by the incredibly swinging quintet featuring Sonny Rollins and Kenny Dorham, the session completely transforms the traditionally stilted 3/4 meter into a vehicle for aggressive, polyrhythmic hard bop. The ambitious conceptual project highlights the leader's immense intellect and profound rhythmic flexibility.
