Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite
by Maxwell
Conceived as an intimate concept album detailing a singular romantic encounter, the debut was heavily delayed by the label before finding massive cultural traction. Collaborating heavily with Sade multi-instrumentalist Stuart Matthewman, the lush, heavily textured instrumentation prioritized traditional musicianship over hip-hop samples. It is widely credited alongside releases by D'Angelo and Erykah Badu for definitively igniting the neo-soul movement.
