'Funky Skull' is bassist Melvin Jackson's leader date for Limelight, bringing together jazz-funk rhythm, unusual textures, and a playful conceptual frame. Jackson was associated with Eddie Harris, and the album shares some of that circle's interest in groove-based experimentation. Its later appeal comes from its odd instrumentation, sample-friendly passages, and refusal to settle into standard soul-jazz formulas.
