Album Notes & Community Reviews

Driven by its iconic, culturally resonant title track, this album established Merle Haggard as a premier voice for the American working class during an era of deep economic recession. The record perfectly balances his tough, electrified Bakersfield sound with profoundly empathetic, beautifully constructed storytelling.
