Album Notes & Community Reviews
Theodorakis composed 'Epitaphios' in Paris in 1958, setting eight poems from Yannis Ritsos's lament for Tassos Tousis, a tobacco worker killed during the 1936 Thessaloniki strikes. Grigoris Bithikotsis sings the cycle with Manolis Chiotis on bouzouki, and this recording, released one week apart from Manos Hadjidakis's rival version with Nana Mouskouri, broke Greek sales records within weeks.
