Stripped down to just the core duo of Mark Mulcahy and Ray Neal, the band decamped to Prince's legendary Paisley Park studios to record this gorgeously sparse college-rock classic. 'Me and Mr. Ray' largely abandons the driving rhythm section of their earlier work in favor of delicate acoustic strumming and intricate, melancholy guitar interplay. The deeply melodic, wistful songwriting solidified their status as crucial R.E.M. contemporaries.
