Largely informed by the tragic death of close friend Aaliyah, Elliott and producer Timbaland crafted a wildly inventive homage to old-school hip-hop culture. The production eschews dark, futuristic electronics in favor of joyful, block-party nostalgia, heavily integrating classic breaks and vintage soul samples.
