Attempting to capitalize on the massive crossover success of 'I Melt with You', the band enlisted producer Hugh Jones to craft a highly polished, commercially oriented third album. The arrangements drift further away from their murky post-punk roots, utilizing bright acoustic guitars, horns, and intricate keyboard layers. While retaining their poetic sensibilities, the pop-leaning production garnered mixed reactions from their original indie fanbase.
