Album Notes & Community Reviews

Capitalizing on the burgeoning countercultural country-rock scene, the Grateful Dead-adjacent outfit hit their commercial peak with this highly conceptual, drug-smuggling narrative album. Heavily bolstered by the inclusion of several brilliant Peter Rowan compositions鈥攎ost notably the massively successful title track鈥攖he record perfectly balances tight, pedal steel-driven country instrumentation with deeply subversive, outlaw lyricism. It is a defining, enduring artifact of 1970s stoner Americana.
