Produced by her former Velvet Underground bandmate John Cale, Nico's fourth solo album is an uncompromisingly bleak, hauntingly beautiful Gothic masterpiece. 'The End' relies on intensely droning harmonium and sparse synthesizer textures to create a wonderfully funereal, deeply ominous avant-folk atmosphere, matching her remarkably sombre, deeply poetic reflections on death.
