The Marble Index
by Nico
On 'The Marble Index', Nico abandoned the folk-pop of her debut for a stark and unprecedented avant-garde sound, combining her somber vocals and droning harmonium with John Cale’s classically-inspired arrangements. This shift to original, deeply personal songwriting created a tenebrous and artistically uncompromising work that defied the pop sensibilities of its era. Largely unheralded upon release, the album's sound and aesthetic became a significant prototype for the gothic rock movement.
