Nina Simone's 'Pastel Blues' is a largely subdued and piano-focused recording where her classical training is applied to the structures of blues, folk, and soul with both urbane sophistication and raw power. The album's somber, emotionally direct atmosphere reflects personal and political turmoil, a mood that culminates in the explosive, ten-minute arrangement of the traditional spiritual "Sinnerman".
