Album Notes & Community Reviews
Recorded with a stellar quintet that included Joe Newman, 'Main Stem' highlights Oliver Nelson's profound abilities as both a saxophonist and a meticulous arranger. The album bridges the gap between muscular hard bop and the more structured, orchestral approaches he would become famous for in his later television and film work. It features a highly articulate swing and tightly constructed thematic material.
