Album Notes & Community Reviews

Broadcast live on CBS on 30 October 1938 as the Halloween episode of The Mercury Theatre on the Air, Howard Koch's adaptation of the H. G. Wells novel framed a Martian invasion as a sequence of breaking news bulletins. Directed and narrated by Orson Welles, the programme provoked widely reported panic among listeners who tuned in late, and the recording was first issued commercially on LP three decades later, electronically rechanneled to simulate stereo from the original transcription discs.
