Radio Ethiopia
by Patti Smith
As the first record credited to the Patti Smith Group, 'Radio Ethiopia' moved toward a heavier, more collaborative hard rock sound under the guidance of producer Jack Douglas, who was tasked with capturing a more commercial appeal. The resulting album was defined by its contrasts, pitting structured, guitar-riff-based songs against the sprawling and chaotic improvisation of the ten-minute title track, which drew accusations of self-indulgence and polarized critics upon its release.
