Gerry Mulligan - Paul Desmond Quartet

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Bringing together two of the most famously lyrical, fiercely intellectual giants of the West Coast scene, this pianoless quartet session is a masterclass in delicate, interwoven counterpoint. The stark contrast between the remarkably airy, upper-register alto lines and the gruff, highly rhythmic baritone anchor creates a deeply conversational, surprisingly light acoustic texture. The extraordinarily relaxed, highly empathetic recording remains a definitive, flawless cornerstone of the cool jazz idiom.
