The Photographer
by Philip Glass
Commissioned by the Holland Festival, this theatrical suite explores the tragic life and work of 19th-century photographic pioneer Eadweard Muybridge. The composition bridges Glass's early, austere minimalism with a grander, more melodic harmonic structure, utilizing vocal choruses, strings, and his signature arpeggiating synthesizers. It stands as a pivotal transitional work within his extensive repertoire of operatic theater.
