Album Notes & Community Reviews

Documenting the formation of his legendary touring orchestra, the visionary arranger presents a set of crisp, incredibly modern big band charts. The ensemble navigates complex, tightly voiced brass sections with an aggressive, blues-drenched swing, heavily featuring brilliant soloists like Clark Terry and Zoot Sims. It stands as a triumphant, high-water mark for large-ensemble jazz orchestration in the late 1950s.
